Before you decide how to get rid of a pile in Polk County, work out which government you are actually under, because the answer changes what is free. The City of Lakeland gives you the test in one sentence: if your cart is gray or black with a yellow lid, you are a Polk County customer, and the number to call is (863) 284-4319. Inside the city limits you get weekly automated garbage, weekly automated recycling and weekly yard waste from the City, plus bulk yard waste collected when a resident or a city driver reports the pile. Outside the city limits, in unincorporated Polk, collection is contracted out, and curbside recycling has been discontinued entirely — the County tells residents to repurpose the old recycling cart for household or yard waste, or call to have it removed. Two neighborhoods a few blocks apart can have genuinely different answers, and the cart color is how you tell.

The County side does have a real bulky allowance, and it is nothing like the per-item pricing you find in some Florida counties. Polk County collects furniture and appliances monthly on a pre-set schedule for items too large for the cart, with no per-item charge, funded through an annual non-ad-valorem assessment rather than a fee per pickup. Residents may also set out up to five additional bags of household waste, four times a year, and yard waste weekly up to four containers. Set-out is within three feet of the curb or the edge of the street and at least three feet from other fixed objects. On the City side, commercial customers get four free bulk collections a year of up to 20 cubic yards each. If your job fits inside one of those routes, use it. We will tell you when it does. What we are for is the job that does not fit — the one with a deadline, or with material on the exclusion list.

That exclusion list is where most junk removal jobs actually land. Polk County does not collect construction debris, whole trees, stumps, root systems, land-clearing material, vehicles, boats, tires, hazardous materials or biomedical waste. The City does not collect construction and demolition debris at the curb either. So a garage cleanout that turns up a demolished workbench, a torn-out vanity, a stack of pavers and four tires has already fallen off the free route entirely. The other constraint is time: monthly bulky collection is monthly, and a house that has to be empty by a closing date does not care about the schedule. You handle the material once, on your own timetable, and everything goes in the same box rather than being sorted into four different municipal programs.

The self-haul alternative is thinner here than people expect, and this is the fact that changes the arithmetic in Lakeland. Polk County has essentially one customer convenience center, and it is at the Northeast Landfill on Bannon Island Road in Haines City, roughly 35 miles east of Lakeland. It opened as a pilot program on 1 June 2026, is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and charges by vehicle rather than by volume: $10 for a standard car, SUV or pickup, $18 for a trailer under six feet, $27 for a trailer six to sixteen feet, and $5 per tire, all as published. Payment is digital only, no cash, and Polk County residency is verified at the gate. Commercial use is not allowed, including, in the County’s words, automated dump trailers. For a Lakeland household that is a seventy-mile round trip per load.

Which leaves the container, and the honest case for it is arithmetic rather than salesmanship. One 15 or 20 yard box on your driveway holds several pickup loads, sits there while you work through the garage, the carport, the lanai and the shed at your own pace, and leaves once. Against that, a self-haul route to Haines City means loading a vehicle, driving 35 miles, paying by the vehicle, unloading by hand and driving back, repeatedly, on the center’s hours. A few things still stay out of the box wherever it goes: batteries, used motor oil, antifreeze, paint, pesticides, fluorescent tubes, fuel containers, cooking oil and electronics all belong at the County household hazardous waste facility on Environmental Loop South in Winter Haven, which is open Friday mornings and Saturday mornings and is free to non-commercial residents.
