The 40 exists for airy bulk, and in Polk County there is plenty of it. This is a warehousing and distribution county as much as a residential one, and a warehouse clear-down — pallet racking, damaged pallets, banding, packaging, obsolete stock, floor striping debris — fills a 40 quickly without approaching a weight problem. Will it fit?

The 40 is the hardest container we place, and the check happens before we load the truck rather than when we arrive. It runs around twenty-two feet long and stands about eight feet tall, and it needs the longest straight approach of anything we run — call it 60 feet clear at an absolute minimum, roughly ten and a half feet of working width, and 20 feet or more of vertical clearance for the hoist, with room for the truck to set it down level and pick it up loaded. On a commercial yard or an active construction lot that is usually straightforward. On a standard Lakeland residential driveway it usually is not, and on a narrow pre-war street in one of the seven historic districts it is not possible at all.
